If you would like to be added to the waitlist, plese send our expedition leader an email. We will also offer this trip in March of 2026. Adding your name to the waitlist will put you in the advanced list for that sign up in the spring. Don’t wait! Get on the list!

In 2018 while working on a journalism assignment commissioned by the Nepalese Ministry of Tourism, Far Xplorer's founder, Christophe Noel, traveled to the farthest western border of the country. Over the course of a month he discovered routes few if any western traveler had ever explored. In 2019 Far Xplorer launched three trips to western Nepal and became the first to traverse western Nepal via the highest continuous network of roads and trails.

As the years passed, our team continued to scout and plan to complete the route across the entire span of Nepal.

After more than five years of planning and honing our expedition skills, we are finally ready to traverse Nepal, west to east, scraping the sky along the highest and most remote roads in the country. In doing so, we will be the first to ever complete this entirely new overland route - a Great Himalayan Traverse.

This is the type of travel we are known for. We push far beyond the tourist routes to visit places no one else can. On this journey, we will spend most of our time in rural regions, trundling down small roads through quaint villages. The route eventually culminates in Nepal's famous tea region adjacent to Darjeeling, India, right under Kangkenjunga, the third tallest peak on eath.

Are you ready to join a small team of adventurers to be the first to tackle this Great Himalayan Traverse?

Live the ADVENTURE

EXPEDITION OVERVIEW

  • We will limit the size of this team to just eight riders. It's a number we have found offers the fluidity required to move freely in rugged areas.

  • Like many of our remote explorations, we will travel with our full support staff of seasoned pros. This will include three cooks, one mechanic, one expedition leader, road guide, camp porters and drivers.

  • There are very few hotels or restaurants where we will be traveling so riders will enjoy our legendary mobile basecamp. Our light and fast version still offers multi course meals, hot showers, and other surprising luxuries.

  • A true expedition of this type requires extensive planning and alignment of resources, all of which will fall within the trip fare. That includes; all accommodations within the trip dates, including the arrival day, meals, motorcycles, fuel, permits, and all of our extensive guide services. You won't reach for your wallet for two weeks.

After our team gathers in Kathmandu, we will board a one hour flight to the western city of Surket in the far western region of Nepal. This is an area we know well, and can almost guarantee you will see no western travelers during our entire time in the west. After a short drive to the border we rendezvous with our team, mount our motorcycles, and head east through the beautiful districts of Jarjakot, Rukum, and many others. The roadway heading east is one of the nicest we will encounter which affords us the opportunity to explore more remote roads, some of which run parallel to the main highway, but with richer cultural experiences and more impressive Himalayan views.

As we near Pokhara, just to the west of Kathmandu, we'll begin diverting again from the main highway in an effort to skirt Nepal's biggest city. The warren of tiny roads laced through the hills will take us to famous villages in the Gorka district.

Pushing further east of Kathmandu the adventure gets more authentic with each successive day. Eastern Nepal is one of the least visited regions of the country, and the most undeveloped. Our route will take us just beneath the Khumbu Valley, home of the Sherpa people and Mount Everest. It is here we begin the eastward exploration of tiny roads high in the foothills. This will be rugged riding on many tracks that are unmapped or signed.

The last days put us within view of Kangkenjunga, the third tallest summit on earth at over 28,000 feet tall. As we near the border, the hills become terraced with the famous tea fields of Illam and Darjeeling. After a farewell with our crew, another short flight puts everyone back in Kathmandu.

As a professional expedition journalist, places like western Nepal were always the most fascinating, and challenging, to visit. With our industry-leading expedition team, we’re now able to access these places with our travel teams. It’s a rare chance to visit the most authentic corners of the Himalayas.

  • Christophe Noel, Founder

Modeled after the finely appointed camps used to climb the highest Himalayan summits, our mobile base camp allows us to go - anywhere. Don’t let the word camp fool you, our roving compound includes private sleeping tents, flushing toilets, hot showers, and multi-course meals served in a dedicated dining tent by our staff of cooks and porters. They are the best in the business and ensure you want for nothing while underway.

The Far Xplorer Base Camp

  • Riders on this trip will need good off-road riding skills and confidence in variable conditions which include loose surfaces, steep slopes, and all the fun conditions of a Nepali road.

  • To ensure maximum enjoyment, riders should have good fitness to make long days in tough conditions more enjoyable. Please be prepared for challenging days with physical activities required.

  • Riders must be 18 years of age, hold a valid motorcycle license, and ideally you should obtain an international drivers license, which is very cheap and easy to obtain online.

And again - prior off-road riding experience and confidence in mixed terrain is a must.

  • We call our trips “expeditions” for a reason. Tours are scripted things with predictability part of the plan. Not every aspect of this type of expedition can be planned with any specificity. This is true expedition travel.

I can understand why Far Xplorer is the only company able to access the remote places in Nepal. Their professionalism and connection to the people of Nepal is simply amazing. We didn’t see another western traveler for the entire two weeks during our trip.
