BOOKING IS NOW OPEN

When we first announced our November 2025 edition of this trip, the first of its kind, it booked full in less than one week. To meet the growing demand for this one-of-a-kind expedition, we are offering two sets of dates for 2026. Don’t wait to grab your spot on this incredible crossing of Nepal. (This expedition is available only after the November 5-18 trip has been fully booked)

In 2018 while working on a journalism assignment commissioned by the Nepalese Ministry of Tourism, Far Xplorer's founder, Christophe Noel, traveled to the farthest western border of the country. Over the course of a month he discovered routes few if any western traveler had ever explored. In 2019 Far Xplorer launched three trips to western Nepal and became the first to traverse the west via the highest continuous network of roads and trails.

As the years passed, our team continued to scout and plan to complete the route across the entire span of Nepal.

After more than five years of planning and honing our expedition skills, we are finally ready to traverse Nepal, west to east, along the highest and most remote roads in the country. In doing so, we will be the first to ever complete this entirely new overland route - a Great Himalayan Traverse.

This is the type of travel we are known for. We push far beyond the tourist routes to visit places no one else can. On this journey, we will spend most of our time in rural regions, trundling down small roads through quaint villages. The route eventually culminates in Nepal's famous tea region adjacent to Darjeeling, India.

Are you ready to join a team of adventurers to be the first to tackle this Great Himalayan Traverse?

EXPEDITION OVERVIEW

After our team gathers in Kathmandu, we will board a one hour flight to the eastern city of Bhadrapur near the lower eastern corner of Nepal. From there we immediately head northward to the famous tea region of Illam, near Darjeeling India. For the first several days our route takes us west and north. With good weather and road conditions, we may have views of Mount Everest, the world’s tallest peak by day three.

On the fifth day we camp just outside of Kathmandu for an early morning ride through the capital city to beat the daily traffic. Exiting on the west side, we’re once again in lush foothills with Himalayan views nearby.

The western half of Nepal, like the east, is pristine and lush. A small road known to only locals takes us to one of our favorite views in all of Nepal. After following the Bheri river westward and south into jungled hills, we enter the lowlands and Bardiya National Park.

Our final two days are wrapped in the warmth of a lowland sun with a good chance to see endangered crocodiles basking in the daylight. We end our journey with one last ride to Dhangadi for the short 90 minute flight back to Kathmandu.

This will be the first ever traverse of Nepal on this route from east to west.

Words from the Expedition Leader

The extreme diversity of Nepal is difficult to describe to those who have yet to experience it. On this trip, we not only explore that diversity east-to-west, we opted to begin in the lowlands, ascend to high hills and Himalayas, and drop again to the border regions of the south. It affords us unfathomable experiences like spotting endangered crocodiles on day two, and watching the morning’s first light hit a 27,000 foot peak, right in front of us at Camp 8. This is the ultimate adventure in one of the most beautiful places on earth. - Christophe Noel

As a professional expedition journalist, places like western Nepal were always the most fascinating, and challenging, to visit. With our industry-leading expedition team, we’re now able to access these places with our travel teams. It’s a rare chance to visit the most authentic corners of the Himalayas.

  • Christophe Noel, Founder

Modeled after the finely appointed camps used to climb the highest Himalayan summits, our mobile base camp allows us to go - anywhere. Don’t let the word camp fool you, our roving compound includes private sleeping tents, flushing toilets, hot showers, and multi-course meals served in a dedicated dining tent by our staff of cooks and porters. They are the best in the business and ensure you want for nothing while underway.

The Far Xplorer Base Camp

I can understand why Far Xplorer is the only company able to access the remote places in Nepal. Their professionalism and connection to the people of Nepal is simply amazing. We didn’t see another western traveler for the entire two weeks during our trip.
