In the late 1600s the region now known as Nepal was comprised of 23 small kingdoms. On this exclusive Far Explorer expedition, we venture deep into five of those ancient lands, each unique in its natural and cultural identity.
For the past three years our team has scouted this new route west of Nepal’s well traveled tourist tracks. It has been our quest to find the most untouched and authentic corners of Nepal where the people live as they have for centuries.
This special adventure combines the beautiful and largely unknown foothill regions of the west with the soaring summits of the world’s tallest mountains. It’s a journey we crafted to showcase the amazing diversity of Nepal from thick forests and terraced hills, to the arid escarpments of the Tibetan Plateau on the northern slopes of the Himalayas. We even plumb the depths of the world’s deepest gorge.
Over the years we have come to learn the allure of the Himalayas draws many travelers to Nepal, but it’s the people that bring them back time and again. This trip, set against green hills and ivory white summits offers rich cultural explorations, unbelievable views, and exciting adventures around every turn.

FOUR AMAZING EXPERIENCES IN ONE EXPEDITION
-
KATHMANDU
It’s the ancient gateway to the Himalayas and profoundly exotic. Kathmandu is the starting point of every Far Xplorer journey and we get to experience it through the eyes of our award-winning cultural guide and Kathmandu native.
-
CULTURES OF NEPAL
Along our route we will interact with various peoples in the remote hill regions of central Nepal. Far removed from the tourists tracks, this is where we find the most authentic Nepal, one not changed in centuries.
-
SIVALIK FOOTHILLS
Few people realize the most magical stratum of the Himalayas are the massive foothills at their base. With millions of terraces, thousands of quaint villages, and endless roads to explore, it is the foothills that our travelers remember most about Nepal.
-
THE GREAT HIMALAYAS
Once in the Mustang Valley our route scrapes the feet of the tallest mountains on earth including the 7th and 10th tallest. It’s a spectacular time of year to visit the Himalayas wit their ivory white peaks set against deep blue skies.
ROUTE OVERVIEW
After a full day exploring the ancient sites of Kathmandu, we hop on a quick 30-minute flight to Pokhara to meet our expedition team. For the next few days we meander through the beautiful Sivalik Foothills while establishing our camps with commanding views of the nearby Himalayas. As we move into the Mustang Valley and into the world’s largest mountain range, we pass through the deepest gorge on earth at a staggering 18,500 feet deep. Once in the Himalayas, we slow our pace of travel to better enjoy the amazing vistas and cultural explorations of the region. A quick ride back down the valley puts us in Pokhara for a night before heading back to Kathmandu.

The Far Xplorer Basecamp
We are the only company to employ the same basecamp system used to climb the world’s highest summits. The main difference - our camp is mobile. This allows us to go anywhere in unmatched comfort. Our camp includes surprising luxuries like private sleeping tents and multi-course meals served in a dedicated dining tent with table linens and a three-person serving staff. Hot showers and even flushing toilets make our hotel on the go as comfortable as possible.

“We spent 10 days in western Nepal and not once did we see another tourist or traveler. The Far Xplorer crew know Nepal so well, some days we didn’t have a plan but had the most incredible time, probably becuase the day was not fully planned. It takes real pros to pull that off.”
The Far Xplorer Support Team
To access the most remote corners of Nepal requires a team of expedition pros. We have the most experienced crew in Nepal’s motorcycle industry. Every camp-supported trip includes one road guide, a mechanic, camp master, head chef, two supporting cooks, two camp porters, and three drivers. An expedition leader oversees the entire operation with a backup support staff located at our home base in Pokhara. With more than 75 years of combined Himalayan experience, it’s this facet of Far Xplorer that no other company can replicate.
Terrain and Road Conditions
This route includes a typical mix of pavement, gravel, and unmaintained roadway that can be loose and challenging, if only for brief periods. Riders will need to be experienced and comfortable on mixed surfaces. We suggest a minimum of at least one year of off-road experience to maximize your enjoyment. While there is a very low chance of mud or sand, rocky roads like the path pictured here are typical. And it’s worth noting, conditions can always change in the Himalayas.

I knew Nepal was going to be fascinating, but it surpassed my expectations entirely. I can’t wait to go back and can’t imagine not doing it again with Far Xplorer.

I didn’t want the trip to end. It was perfect from start to finish thanks to the amazing work by the Far Xplorer team. They are the best.

-
Riders on this trip will need good off-road riding skills and confidence in variable conditions which include loose surfaces, steep slopes, and all the fun conditions of a Nepali road.
-
To ensure maximum enjoyment, riders should have good fitness to make long days in tough conditions more enjoyable. Please be prepared for challenging days with physical activities required.
-
Riders must be 18 years of age, hold a valid motorcycle license, and ideally you should obtain an international drivers license, which is very cheap and easy to obtain online.
And again - prior off-road riding experience and confidence in mixed terrain is a must. -
We call our trips “expeditions” for a reason. Tours are scripted things with predictability part of the plan. Not every aspect of this type of expedition can be planned with any specificity. This is true expedition travel.

I cannot thank the Far Xplorer team enough for putting this trip together. Their knowledge of Nepal and ability to take us to such remote places is amazing. The entire trip was so much better than I expected and will be hard to beat.

-
Most flights arrive in the early morning allowing for time to rest and explore Kathmandu.
-
This is a fun day of exploration as we visit the ancient temples, palaces, and shrines of Kathmandu with our award-winning cultural guide.
-
At sunrise we hop on a short 30 minute flight to Pokhara where we meet our expedition team and head off on our first brief ride to Camp one.
-
Our first full day of travel leads us deep into Nepal’s beautiful foothill regions. It’s a fun day on quiet roads through the old kingdom of Palpa on route to Camp 2.
-
We continue following river valleys and trundling over hilltops with amazing views of the Himalayas. Our first good session of offroad at the day’s end brings us to a secret village with an incredible camp location.
-
We tackle one of the rougher roads on the trip this day. The miles are short, the views unimaginable, and the camp location for the night one of our best. It offers a chance to go visit the locals in a nearby village.
-
We’ve spent enough time admiring the Himalayas from a close distance. Now it is time to ride amongst the world’s biggest peaks. This is our first day in the Himalayas.
-
We slow our pace while in the Himalayas. There is much to see and small trails and roads to explore. This is our first of two days in the Himalayas. (Elevation is only 9,000 feet)
-
Our last camp is definitely one of our favorites and the 5 hour ride to get there is full of adventure. We leave the Himalayas but end the day with one of the best views in Nepal.
-
Our last camp is placed close to Pokhara to allow us a late morning arrival. There is much to see and do in Pokhara with a full afternoon to enjoy Nepal’s lakeside city. This is our last ride, a short 2-hour paved ramble.
-
After a relaxing morning in Pokhara, we fly back to Kathmandu arriving in the early afternoon with ample time to see more sights and grab fun souvenirs. Your last night hotel is included at the Nomad Hotel.
-
Most flights depart in the late afternoon and evening offering more time to relax or take in the local sights.
ITINERARY AT A GLANCE
A signature element to any Far Xplorer expedition is a willingness to let the adventure unfold organically. Our itineraries are a starting point, a general plan following routes we know well. Changes are not just inevitable, they are encouraged. This is the truest pursuit of adventure and why we never refer to our trips as - tours.
